I’m Crazy, How Are You?

Wow, I haven’t updated since Friday? Where did my weekend go?

Oh yeah. That’s right. I have two girls who won’t give me a moment’s peace.

Seriously, how do you convince a five month old that she does not need to scream loud enough to alert social services because I had the nerve to put her down on a fluffy soft blanket on the floor, surrounded by a bunch of developmentally stimulating and appropriate toys, for just five minutes so I can make myself a frikkin’ sandwich? The crying and fussing is hard to endure, especially when you’re trying to enjoy lunch, or go to the bathroom, or give her big sister a little attention.

I remember that Cordy was a high-needs baby, too – at least I thought so at the time. Someone forgot to give Mira the message that she’s the second child, so it isn’t all about her. Putting her in her swing, in her bouncy seat, on the couch, in her crib, or any other surface (Bumbo on a countertop edge?) that isn’t my lap or my hip is a serious offense.

No problem, you might say, just get your rest during her naps. That would be fine, if she took real naps. Her naps consist of 3 catnaps lasting 15-20 minutes during the day.

Believe me, I’m not trying to play the “who has to endure the worst baby?” game, because I know there is someone out there who has a baby with some sort of aversion to sleeping all night long or a baby with a shriek that can break glass. Mira has a smile that would make your heart grow three times its size, and she is so cute when she sleeps. And Mira does sleep well at night. It’s just the other 13 hours of the day that are the problem.

But enough of that rant. It wasn’t our entire weekend, and we did actually have some fun! Aaron and I took the girls to Boo at the Zoo for some trick or treat practice. Kids are encouraged to come in costume, and community sponsors have treat stations set up throughout the zoo. Fierce animals and a candy high…woo-hoo!

It went really well, and for the first time in ages, we had a pleasant day out with no meltdowns from Cordy. She loved getting candy put in her pumpkin, even if she doesn’t know what it is. (Totally serious – she has no idea what candy is. Chocolate brownies are another story, though.)

Cordy’s costume was cute, although she refused to wear the hat. And without the pirate hat, she didn’t look much like a pirate. More like an Anne Rice vampire, thanks to the lace frills and her pale skin. Maybe we should have added a little fake blood and dressed her as Claudia from Interview with the Vampire?

Mira wore her Princess Leia outfit, including her hat. Several people did double takes as they walked past the stroller and saw her. It was cold on Saturday, but Mira’s costume is made of felt so she didn’t mind at all.

  1. Hehehe, Claudia and Leia (or however it’s spelled!) they are adorable!

  2. OMG Mira!!!! They are both sooo cute. Dang I wish I lived closer so I could hold Mira for you while you napped for 3 days.

  3. I think I might be crazy too. Robby refuses to be put down. And I thought I was the only one who worried that someone was going to call social services…my lunch has to be PRE-MADE if I am going to to get to eat anything.

  4. That Leia costume is FANTASTIC!! Love the buns.

My baby never slept, either. At 15 months, we’re finally seeing consistent naps. Now if he would just start sleeping through the night *yawn*. It’s amazing how their smiles erase most of your exhaustion, isn’t it?

  5. Sarcastic Mom (aka Lotus) says

The Princess Leia costume really is great!

  6. They are SO cute!!! Makes it worth the whole “no time to yourself” thing, huh? I hope it gets better and you get to make a sandwich in peace soon. Gabe and her could hang out.. she can teach him how to sleep and he can teach her how to be more mellow 🙂

  7. My oldest DD was a high needs baby too shrieking with blood curdling screams when I would dare to put her down. My saving grace was co-sleeping when I fed her. I got a nap that way, and she slept longer.

We also learned some tricks: we’d swaddle her, and use a heating pad to warm up her blanket. Remove the heating pad, then she didn’t have such a temp change when we put her down. I’d usually get her to sleep a few more minutes that way too! 🙂

  8. Love it they are adorable … so cute!
Tatum does not nap at day wither … only 3 naps for aprox 20 min … drives me nuts but she too sleeps for 12 hours at night so I am not messing with it … haha

  9. Major Bedhead says

That Princess Leia costume is hysterical. And Cordy looks adorable – that wink! Priceless.

I got nothing for you on the sleep front. The Bug was the same way and still, at fifteen months, is The World’s Worst Sleeper. She takes one nap that varies in length from 10 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the phase of the moon, I think. She wakes up at least three times a night. It’s getting old and I’m frazzled, too. So, not much of a suggestion, just some commiseration.

  10. oh my…I think I’m suffering from cuteness overdose! I’m always blown away by Cordy’s beautiful curls but the cuteness that is Princess Mira makes my teeth hurt she’s so sweet~

I’m so upset that we missed Boo at the Zoo this year. I think Kylie would’ve enjoyed it much more this year. Darn those in laws who needed help moving!

Glad to hear you had a meltdown free family outing! Booyah for Cordy!

  11. I love, love, love your girls’ costumes! They look adorable.

  12. Crazy? Yup I’m joining that club.

Cordy does look like a goth vampire child! Mira is too cute for words.

  13. I still think that the Princess Leia costume is the best baby costume I’ve seen.

So glad you guys had a tantrum free day! Now you know that they ARE possible, even if they’re few and far between.

  14. I wish I had known about Boo at the Zoo because we have this little tiger outfit for Evan and no place to wear it! The zoo would have been absolutely PERFECT. Sounds like a fun day.

Cute girls in cute costumes, by the way. Those “buns” on Mira are just too much.

  15. Oh my gosh! Mira is adorable! Not that Cordy isn’t, but I’ve never seen a costume like that for a baby.

Glad you guys had fun — we refuse to do the HallowZOOween this year because it was so crazy last year. Maybe when she’s old enough to actually ask to go…

  16. Sorry it’s crazy for you. It sometimes makes it hard to remember the fun, but it looks like you’re able to find the good. Those pictures are divine.

  17. Jennifer aka Binky Bitch says

I know nothing about high needs babies! Nothing at all!

They looked adorable in their costumes!

  18. She is a princess! The picture proves it 🙂

  19. So cute! I hope they had a good time tonight.

  20. So adorable!!
