Lady Gaga for Kids?

I think I’m ready to submit my application to the Bad Moms Club.

I can only take so much kid music while driving before I have to switch my iPod to something that isn’t aimed at the preschool set. Which means Cordy is occasionally forced to listen to songs I like in the car. However, she’s never really shown any signs that she’s paying attention to my music. Or at least I thought she wasn’t listening – there’s one song in particular that she’s obsessed with now. A song that she probably shouldn’t like so much.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, she’s indoctrinated her sister, and Mira begs to hear the “Rah-ah-ah” song anytime we get into the car:

Yep, they both love Lady Gaga. And not just that song. Paparazzi, Poker Face, Just Dance – all songs they love to hear. It seems we skipped the Miley Cyrus, slightly-inappropriate-for-preschoolers craze and went straight for the totally inappropriate. They only get to hear it in the car, and neither of them have watched the video, although Cordy has seen photos of Lady Gaga.

The good news is that Mira totally doesn’t understand the lyrics, and Cordy tends to make up her own words to the tune rather than sing what she’s hearing. (Other than constantly singing the “Rah-rah, rah-ah-ah” part, which she does all the time.) I actually think she isn’t listening to the words, but instead likes the beat of the music and the repetition of the rah-ah-ah part.

(There is one pop song she’s learning the words to, but it’s far more G-rated and a song that I’d consider safe for all ages. Also, a great song.)

I guess I can’t be too hard on myself. I remember being a little kid and singing along to Madonna’s Like a Virgin. I didn’t even know what it meant at the time, but hey, it was a catchy song and she was pretty and dressed so cool with 100 jelly bracelets on her arms. And I turned out OK, right? Right?

Note to Lady Gaga – please make a children’s album that’s just as good as your current one. My five year old thinks you’re awesome. And pretty. And she loves how you dress.

  1. My kids love Lady Gaga, too. I don’t mind them listening to her because they can’t understand what she’s saying yet, and they LOVE dancing to her.

    I might, too. 🙂

  2. I’m quite relieved to learn I’m not the only mom who not only loves Lady Gaga, but has introduced her to small children!

Their favorite is the “rah-rah song.”

And Poker Face runs a close second.

Like yours, they don’t understand the words or meaning. I hope.

I took the Barney music for as long as I could and promptly switched to CDs (No ipods in my day). My children quickly learned to love music and started requesting their favorites. It was Ricky Martin at the time. Mom needs to not be driven cray when she drives.:)

  5. if it makes you feel any better for a while my daughter liked I kissed a girl, and before that it was Bleeding Love.

  6. We’ve never been kids music people here and our kids have been raised on the White Stripes, The Beatles, Green Day, and the like. Q was listening to iTunes’ free Christmas compilation the other day, without much interest, until he heard Weezer’s rendition of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.” Then he declared, “I like THIS song!” That said, They Might Be Giants are awesome and amazing and we love love love, “Here Comes Science!”

  7. My kid’s favorite band at the age of two was Green Day.

He’s since moved on to a lot of Euro-trance electronica.

He’s also a big fan of Beyonce’s Single Ladies.

Um, yeah. Not here to judge.

  8. I bought two Gaga singles, and now I wishing I bought the whole album!

Like you, I think that’s a video I won’t be sharing with the kiddos though.

  9. Condo Blues says

They Might be Giants did a kids album. I bought it for my sister who couldn’t take Barney music anymore.

  10. My son liked Black Eyed Peas Boom Boom Pow. When he got in the car for months he’d say, “Where my Boom Boom song?” I think Lady Gaga is on the newest Kids Bop.

  11. Baby in Broad says

Westley adores Lady Gaga. He’s a huge fan. (He’s two.) We’ve been watching the “Bad Romance” video daily for a little while now.

Yes, my toddler loves the video for “Bad Romance.” And I’m OK with him watching it, so you’ll get no judgment from me!

The “Paparazzi” video is a different story, however.

  12. Super Mommie says

You’re right, we did sing “Like a Virgin” REALLY loud! AND, we wanted to dress like her! I was older so I totally understood the words!

  13. My son (5 years old) is a lady gaga addict. i’m searching the internet for appropriate performances to let him watch (I think I’ve found one). He’s been begging to go see her…umm, not for another 11 years! 🙂
Wouldn’t it be awesome if she did seasame steet! I’m going to tweet her and rally for that!!

  14. Appropriate Lady Gaga video on You Tube: so far, I allow my almost 2 y.o. (who is obsessed with Lady Gaga)to watch the Bad Romance performance on the Ellen DeGeneres show. I figured if it was OK for daytime TV,it would have to be at least PG=rated.
