Review: The VTech Connect-to-Cell Phone System

This review is sponsored by VTech.

VTech Phone ReviewWe’re one of those oddball families who still has a landline. I know, it totally proves I’m a Gen X kid, but we have a few reasons for keeping it around. First, with the deal we received through our cable company, the landline is practically free. It’s also useful to have when you need to give out your phone number for offices and credit card companies – it’s basically our way of screening calls. If we don’t know the number, we don’t answer. If they’re someone important, they’ll leave a message or call one of our cell phones, which anyone important to us should also have.

Our landline is also that little extra protection against the unknown. Last year when we had the giant summer storm (the derecho), cell signal was knocked out for most of the night. The only way to call someone was if you had a landline, which we did. It came in handy for checking in on friends and family.

My cell is my primary phone, though. And while I love its ability to be a phone, camera, game center, work center, calendar, alarm clock, and kid entertainment device all-in-one, there is one thing it can’t do: clone itself. I get so frustrated when I leave my phone upstairs in the morning, only realizing hours later that I didn’t have it and that I missed calls while we were on different floors. Our landline has two handsets, but my cell phone is limited to a single device. [Read more…]

Best Buy Mobile Specialty Stores

Every other year, the start of July is known as upgrade-month for us. Aaron and I both have iPhones and always look forward to the end of our contract when we’re eligible for new phones. I usually start looking for any promotions in June, since we can upgrade as early as mid-June.

So this time, when it was time to upgrade, I immediately looked to our wireless provider. AT&T was running a promotion that looked good, but the fine print proved for the deal to not be as good as it sounded. I’m not going to get into details, but I’ll say their online promotion was misleading. Once it was clear that their promotion wasn’t the right one, I walked out of the AT&T store.

Best Buy MobileI was starting to face the reality that I might NOT upgrade this year when Best Buy contacted me with a promotion from their Best Buy Mobile Specialty stores. I knew they had a recycling program for older tech at the standard Best Buy stores, but I didn’t realize that they offer a trade-in program for older phones also at their mobile specialty stores, where you can get a Best Buy gift card to apply towards a new phone. Mom’s Words of Wisdom for Healthy Living #momwisdom

Thanks to Nestlé® Pure Life® Purified Water for sponsoring today’s discussion.

Do you ever think back to those sage words of advice your mom may have given you when you were younger and you now realize she was right? OK, mine still delivers her advice on a weekly basis, but much of it is the same that it was when I was younger, with some additional parenting advice thrown in there, too.

My mom is one of those people who believes natural is best. She grew up on a farm where they raised their own animals and veggies for food. What they didn’t raise, they bought locally. They had dairy cows for milk, pigs for meat, and chickens for eggs and meat. Meals were prepared in a house without running water. If she wanted a drink, she used the pump in the yard to get herself some water. If she wanted a treat, she’d go walk into the fields near the edge of the woods and look for any berries that had ripened, bringing back extras for her family to share.

Bringing New Life to Our Dishwasher with Cascade Platinum Pacs (sponsored)

Disclosure: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Cascade. I received a product sample to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating. All opinions stated here are my own and, as always, your mileage may vary.

We moved into our house in 2004, and we were thrilled that our new house came with a shiny new dishwasher. Of course, the dishwasher was little more than the most basic of models (the builders weren’t going to put a fancy dishwasher in a kitchen without a significant price increase), but it has saved us from needing to hand wash everything for over eight years.

When we load the dishwasher, we have to make sure everything is rinsed well first or we’ll be given back hot dishes and silverware with sterilized food particles stuck to them. Like I said, it’s a very basic model dishwasher. Lately, though, we’ve noticed that it hasn’t even been cleaning the dishes as well as before. Even small food particles were left on silverware, and the glasses were coming out looking cloudy. Let’s face it – eating with dishes and silverware that aren’t looking their best is unappetizing, right?

Tips For Keeping Your iPhone Safe & Charged At Conferences

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post courtesy of Best Buy. All opinions and tips shared here are entirely my own.

It’s summer and it’s conference season, with several blog conferences ahead for some of us. BlogHer is coming up next month, and then I’ll be going to the Type-A Parent Conference in September. I’d love to attend more conferences, but finding the time is always tough.

Back when I went to my first conference, many people dragged their laptops with them. There are still a lot of laptops at conferences now, but more often you’ll see a lot of smartphones and tablets, which are often good enough if you’re not planning to do any live-blogging of sessions or intensive post writing while you’re at the conference. (And really? Save your writing for when you get home and get out there meeting new bloggers instead!)

I love my iPhone. It’s been the best for most of my needs at blog conferences. The camera is good for most photo-taking needs, all of my social media apps are right there, and I can even type out brief post ideas if needed. I still bring my laptop with me to conferences, but it usually stays in the hotel room while my phone does most of the hard work.

If you’ll be attending your first conference soon (or just going to a big gathering or vacation), here are a few tips for bringing your smartphone with you.
